What is vapour blasting?
Vapour blasting – also known as wet blasting, aqua blasting or sometimes slurry blasting – is a process used to remove contaminants from the surface of an object, such as:
- Rust and oxidation
- Corrosion
- Unwanted paint and coatings
Vapour blasting can also be used to subtly adjust or shape the surface finish of the object, known as the surface profile.
However, if you’re looking for a rougher surface texture (which can often help you achieve better adhesion when applying new paint or coatings), dry sandblasting offers a wider range of surface profile finishes.
(Please note that vapour blasting cannot remove powder coatings. If you need help removing powder coatings from your item, take a look at our sandblasting services.
How does vapour blasting work?
Vapour blasting works by spraying a mix of water and granular material (the latter known as abrasive media) across the surface at high pressure.
The mixture gently scrubs away the unwanted contaminants on top of the surface, gradually revealing the clean material underneath.
The water effectively cushions the impact of the abrasive media; providing a gentle clean that won’t wear down the surface material or warp it out of shape. This is particularly important for precision-engineered mechanical components, where any change or damage might affect their performance.
What materials are suitable for vapour blasting?
Vapour blasting is suitable for a wide range of metals; and since it offers a more gentle abrasive blasting process than traditional sandblasting, it’s perfect for softer metals such as:
- Aluminium
- Gold
- Silver
- Bronze
- Nickel
- Brass
- Copper
You can even use wet blasting for some plastics, ceramics and wood surfaces; and of course, it’s also suitable for tougher metals like stainless steel and titanium.
What abrasive media do you use for vapour blasting?
At Ultrablast, we use a mix of water and fine glass bead media, which delivers a smooth satin-like finish.
Water pressures and concentration of abrasive media can be adjusted to match your surface profile needs; simply get in touch to discuss your requirements.
Where can I find out more about your vapour blasting process?
At Ultrablast, our process typically starts with a pre-wash to remove oil and grease, followed by a thorough vapour blast clean in our blast cabinet, then a rinse to remove any loose media, and finally drying via compressed air and our vacuum oven.
If you’re interested in seeing the process close up, you’re welcome to join us at our Portsmouth blast cleaning workshop and watch your items go from dull to sparkling clean; just ask!
Does Ultrablast provide mobile vapour blasting?
Unfortunately, Ultrablast does not currently offer mobile vapour blasting services. All our work takes place at our Portsmouth workshop, where we have all the tools to deliver the best results for your items.
If you’re based further afield, we can arrange postal collection and delivery for certain items upon request; just get in touch!
