What is sandblasting?
Sandblasting – also known as dry blasting or shot blasting – is a process used to modify the surface quality of an object or material; known as the surface profile.
Sandblasting can be used to:
- remove grease, oil, rust, oxidation, corrosion, old paint/coatings and other contaminants
- roughen a surface profile; which can prepare the surface for stronger bonding of paints, coatings, adhesives or sealants applied after sandblasting
- smoothen a surface profile; creating a more aesthetically pleasing finish
How does vapour blasting work?
Vapour blasting works by spraying a mix of water and granular material (the latter known as abrasive media) across the surface at high pressure.
The mixture gently scrubs away the unwanted contaminants on top of the surface, gradually revealing the clean material underneath.
The water effectively cushions the impact of the abrasive media; providing a gentle clean that won’t wear down the surface material or warp it out of shape. This is particularly important for precision-engineered mechanical components, where any change or damage might affect their performance.
Will sandblasting damage my items?
For most simple metal surfaces, sandblasting is perfectly safe. However, the sandblasting process does naturally grind away at the surface material, which can potentially damage some plastics and softer metals.
Our dry blasting process is designed to offer a more gentle surface clean than other sandblasting methods; but if you’re looking to clean a particularly delicate item, Ultrablast also offers vapour blasting services; find out more on our vapour blasting page.
How does sandblasting work?
Sandblasting uses compressed air to propel a spray of granular material (known as abrasive media) across a surface at high speed. The tiny granules gradually strip away the layers of rust, oxidation, corrosion and/or paint that sit on top; leaving the material surface clear and looking good as new.
What materials are suitable for sandblasting?
Sandblasting is generally suitable for a wide range of metal parts and machinery; including steel and tinware.
For softer materials, vapour blasting may provide a safer blast cleaning option and a neater finish. If you’re unsure, Ultrablast can recommend the best route for your particular items; just drop us a line.
What blasting media do you use for sandblasting?
At Ultrablast, our dry blasting process uses crushed glass, aluminium oxide grit or garnet grit media to deliver a more gentle surface cleaning. This creates clear, clean surfaces while minimising any impact to the surface material itself.
Abrasive media grades, concentrations and pressures can all be adjusted to achieve your ideal surface profile finish.
