What is ultrasonic cleaning?
Ultrasonic cleaning is a process which uses sound waves to clear away dirt, oil, grime, light rust, fingerprints and other contaminants.
It’s a highly effective cleaning method for a wide variety of objects and components; including items with tight spots and recesses which are difficult (or even impossible) to reach via other cleaning methods.
Ultrasonic cleaning is also non-abrasive, so it’s perfect for materials like glass and plastics where sandblasting or vapour blasting might cause damage.
How does ultrasonic cleaning work?
Ultrasonic cleaning works by submerging the item to be cleaned in a solution fluid and generating very high-frequency sound waves through the solution.
The waves create microscopic ‘cavitation’ bubbles, which grow in size and then implode under the pressure of the waves. The implosion generates intense heat and produces an extremely fast suction effect; both of which pull contaminants away from the surface of the item.
What items can be cleaned with ultrasonic cleaning?
Ultrasonic cavitation is ideal for carb cleaning and cylinder head cleaning; plus it can also be used to clean:
- Engine blocks
- Fuel injectors
- Ceramic parts
- Pistons
- Valves
As well as automotive engine components, ultrasonic cleaning can offer the perfect cleaning option for:
- Ceramic ornaments
- Glassware
- Jewellery
- Gemstones
- Antique items
- Printed circuit boards (PCBs) & other electronic components

Will ultrasonic cleaning damage my items?
Rest assured, ultrasonic cleaning is perfectly safe for a wide range of items, as long as the correct process is carefully followed.
While the process uses high-frequency vibrations, these won’t harm the integrity of brittle materials like glass, ceramics and even some jewels and gemstones.
Different cleaning solutions are employed in ultrasonic cleaning to achieve different effects. Certain solutions won’t react well with certain materials, but not to worry; at Ultrablast, we always use the correct solution formulas to match your item’s requirements.
Please note that certain items cannot be safely cleaned via ultrasonic cleaning. At Ultrablast, we’ll always let you know beforehand if any of your items are unsuitable for our ultrasonic cleaning tank.
In these cases, we’ll also let you know if vapour blasting or sandblasting may be a better option for cleaning your items. Find out more on our vapour blasting and sandblasting.
What’s the max size object that Ultrablast can clean with ultrasonic cleaning?
Our ultrasonic cleaning tank is 600mm x 500mm x 300mm with a capacity of 65 litres; roughly the same size as a straight-six engine cylinder head.
Unfortunately we are currently unable to facilitate ultrasonic cleaning for larger items; however, we can clean larger assemblies if they can be disassembled into smaller components. Similarly, we can offer ultrasonic cleaning for large item batches if they’re split into smaller batches.
